Subject: technosignatures -- ufos and cryptocurrency (1/2)

[uploaded 18 times; last 17/09/2024]

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
- We look for technosignatures of "others" in a new place -- global
  financial markets; specifically crypto currency.
- It seems overall UFO activity and several different types of
activity are associated with net "burning" of Bitcoin. Burning is a
legitimate tool big investors can use to increase the value of
  remaining coins.
- We speculate on who might need to hedge their investments due to
  increased UFO activity.
- An increase in crypto supply is the result of normal "mining"
operations. But a group with access to advanced computers e.g.
so-called Quantum Computers or even more advanced machines would
find it trivial to perform the calculations required to "mint"
new crypto coins. In a future post we will find signs some mining may
  happen "elsewhere".

The AI programs I run signalled me some time back that certain
datasets seemed to be related to either planetary movements or UFO
sightings.

We've looked previously at possible "technosignatures" of what may be
non-human activities in our local neighbourhood including some very
close to home -- patterns of activity on the internet and www. It
seemed in that case there were some unusually high correlations
between certain search engine operations, themselves maybe triggered
by "customers" of the relevant services although activity related to
operation of certain business and military AI's may also play a part,
and the position of certain planets and certain types of UFO activity.
It may be you don't need to dredge up the sea floor or find unusual
objects glinting in the sun in LEO to find evidence of "visitors".
If they are, indeed, everywhere as we might expect from simple models
of population growth and the passage of 13 billion years -- then markers
of relevant activity should be everywhere. Perhaps so commonly it's
effectively invisible to the new kids on the block -- aka us.

Now the AI programs have found patterns in world financial data
that seems to ring the same bells. As we've speculated before, this
is possible for a variety of reasons. E.g. some group that is "in the
know" about the supposedly secret activities of world militaries may be
hedging their bets based on UFO activity or predictors of that
activity, such as planetary movements or observations from space
telescopes or other probes.

But the more interesting prospect -- as for the web search engine
patterns -- is that "they" are directly influencing the operations of
markets for some reason. Some part of the folklore argues that
advanced civilisations will tend to have a "hands off" approach to
handling contact with our civilisation. I.e. almost the direct opposite
of everything first contact on planet Earth has been about for the past
1000 years.

The idea is that an advanced civilisation already has access to all
the resources it could possibly need and/or want, and there is no
pressure to exploit any primitives it encounters in its travels. That
might also be true if there are no "travels" -- if the entire
universe, or at least our galaxy, has been entirely explored and
"settled" by now.

But we might speculate that maybe it is a good idea to have *some*
interaction with primitive civilisations if only to protect yourself
if they start exploring nearby planets and have a proclivity to bomb
first and don't ask questions later.

And if there is some contact on-going then it might be a great idea to
get some local currency. And a great way, so the AI's say, is if you
maybe are clever enough to crack certain hard math problems or maybe
see into the future then stock markets would be an easy way to go.
You could be guaranteed of getting a bit of pocket money in case it
was needed and also still maintain a fairly light touch on the
relevant primitive civilisation. No-one would ever have to see
anything worrying. It could all be done online.

The crypto market is particularly interesting from this perspective.
It is totally based on math. If your math is good enough and your
computers are ahead of the relevant primitive civilisation, you can
syphon off enough cash for a rainy day but leave 99.99% of the market
to do whatever it was going to do anyway.

There are a slew of crypto assets and they operate in slightly
different ways. But the biggest is still Bitcoin (BTC), so I've looked
at that first.

The virtual currency is based on "coins". The system was set up so
there were a finite number of coins possible -- about 21 million. A
coin is a special number that is one of the 21 million solutions to a
hard math problem. It takes a lot of computer time to find such a
solution. Currently about 19 million are known. But "miners" are
groups that buy lots of computer time and try to find more. There's a
protocol established for a miner to publish any solution they find
before it becomes a valid coin. Interestingly, part of the publication
process involves "burning" some number of other coins they already
hold. "Burning" means taking a coin and usually giving it to a
special authority to hold inside an equally strong crypto-based
wallet for which there is no decrypting key. There is supposedly a
protocol setup to verify that burns really happen and that no new coin
is ever accepted that was supposedly burned. Coins are also burned by
holders to create an artificial shortage of coins and therefore boost
their value.

So one place to start looking for "tinkering" from outside is the day
to day change in the number of coins that are in the system. If
someone is mining coins because they have advanced computers then it
might show up. If someone outside the system is burning coins for some
reason, that might also show up. But it might also be that certain
groups that have "special knowledge" might also burn coins when they
"know something". Under some conditions it might be wise to try to
boost the value of your BTC investment by burning a few coins. This we
might also be able to see.

So the first thing we might like to look at. Does the supply of coins
rise and fall in any way similar to the day by day rise and fall in
UFO activity/sightings?

And we can immediately find -- yes it does. Slightly.

Taking the NUFORC data for day to day UFO activity we find the supply
of BTC makes statistically similar movements around 8 days later. The
net result seems to be -- if UFO sightings go up significantly then
around 8 days later the supply of BTC goes down. UFO flaps highly
correlate with BTC burning within the next 8 days. A possible
mental model of the delay -- it takes a while for UFO sightings to be
reported or the occurrence of a UFO flap to be determined. You don't
always know "on the day" such an event is happening.

The stats models for this are as follows:

Lag	Trans	R2 Beta stderr
15	y	0.12822708	-0.00237388	0.000650253
15 0.10417504	-30204.3	9304.86
8	y	0.08633836	-0.00164812	0.000563236
22	y	0.08379908	-0.00143638	0.000498948
8	xy	0.08107107	-0.0302653	0.0107044
15	xy	0.07376358	-0.0267456	0.00995642
8 0.06750024	-20461.3	7989.45
16	y	0.06455877	-0.00183896	0.000735382
22 0.06416343	-17430.6	6993.27
8	x	0.06050974	-363340 150403

The models above are ordered by their R2 ("explanation power"). All
time-series models (i.e. adjusting for serial correlations --
essentially "inertia" in BTC movements) passed 2 indep stats tests at
90% confidence or better. The best model has a lag of 15 days. The
"Trans" column shows this is a log model. (Models marked "xy" are
power laws; "x" means the model involves the log of the UFO
sightings). When UFO activity changes there is a statistically robust
change in BTC supply over the next 15 days. The link explains about
13% (the R2) of the day-to-day level of BTC supply. The net result on
supply is about 0.2% of BTC are burned for each UFO sighted about 15
days previously.

Other models are similar. All statistically robust but with different
lags and transforms trying to find the best R2 possible. All of them
indicate move UFO activity results in fewer BTC later as a result of
some level of burning. There might also be mining going on, but the
net result is less BTC after some number of days.

So it seems "someone" may be hedging based on what they know about UFO
activity. Via one or other mechanism it may be increased activity
from a technologically superior group may create increased risk for
people with a big investment in the technology they do have access to.
We might speculate about who these someones might be. But it's kinda
obvious that energy underpins most of the modern world. And as we saw
in a prev post, the supposed preoccupation of the English-speaking
world with UFO's tends to pick out the special place English-speaking
countries have had in the development of the global energy
infrastructure and the Industrial Revolution of the 19th cent.

The next thing we might like to look at is whether certain types of
UFO activity have a larger effect on BTC supply than the average,
above. And the answer again is yes.

We can break down UFO sightings by type/shape and colour as well as
other keywords that might be used in the description of the sighting.

The merged set of simple categories looks like:

Type Lag Transf R2 Beta stderr
orange 2 xy 0.34384772 -0.100375 0.0171842
Fireball 1 xy 0.20589095 -0.0586605 0.0160063
red 8 x 0.10496307 -428358 136815
bright 8 y 0.04377575 -0.00467588 0.00245637
Light 8 xy 0.03261619 -0.0117609 0.00711671
Sphere 1 x 0.01983705 -138254 128333

These are the only categories out of 45 that passed the 2 stats tests
at >=90% confidence. All models agree that the net effect of increase
activity of the relevant type is a reduction in BTC supply some number
of days later. UFO reports mentioning "orange" e.g. lights in the sky
or the overall colour of some sighted object have the most certain effect --
about 34% of day-to-day variation in BTC supply relates to orange UFOs.
The "xy" column indicates the relationship is a power law: y = 1.67018e+07
* x^-0.100375 where y is the BTC supply on a given day and x is the
number of orange UFO's reported 2 days previously. Reports of
Fireball-type UFO's (likely including meteors that have the relevant
"burning" appearance) are similar, but the lag is only 1 day.

Why orange and Fireball categories have lags of 1-2 days but "red",
"bright", and "Light" UFO sightings have a lag of 8 between sighting
and an observed effect on BTC supply might be interesting. We might
speculate that some types of UFO sighting are reported early and
therefore are available to whoever might want to burn a BTC, while
reports of other types of UFO go un-noted for a week or so.
E.g. fireballs are tracked by astronomers possibly much better than
civilians watching the sky for UFOs. If whoever has relevant links
with observatories in various countries they may be able to
immediately respond to news of several fireballs being seen somewhere
but the response from sightings of "lights in the sky" might take
several days to filter through tabloids or other news media.

So it seems at least some crypto activity is related in some way to
UFO activity. As yet we have no evidence increased UFO activity might
be associated with increased mining. I.e. some advanced civilisation
nearby may be putting some spare computer power into creating some
loose change in case they need to buy raw material not conveniently
available where they come from.

But we'll look in a later post at some such +ve links and what it
might say about global finances.
