Subject: TESS sector 12

[uploaded 36 times; last 17/10/2024]

I've put up some more movies and images at
<http://kym.massbus.org/UFO/TESS/SECTORS/s12/>.

View this as another preliminary effort to make what the AI programs
show me more understandable to poor humans.

The exhibit comes in a few sections I'll try to keep consistent across
the parts of the sky so far examined in detail. But no promises.
Heaven knows the AI's don't worry about any kind of consistency and
just keep churning through their goal lists inventing and revising
things crazily as they go along. The great thing about having a robot
brain is you can change your mind on a dime and re-run anything that
needs to be revised based on the new information. This includes
editing tools they use to extract the information in the first place.
You can take it from me, keeping up with all this is a full time job. :)

Anyhow. At the top of the page is a link to the sky map showing where
"sector 12" is. The TESS mission has proceeded from 2018 one sector at
a time. A sector is not necessarily a fixed part of the sky -- it
seems to be more a section of the TESS output. The same part of the
sky may be re-visited by the telescope later and be given additional
sector numbers.

We see S12 is near Alpha Centauri. It kinda makes sense post hoc the
AI's would predict something was interesting there given it is the
closest star outside our little family. It could be a stepping stone
to here, so we might see things moving in front of stars near Alpha
Cent if, in fact, they are coming from or via there.

The next section shows movies of the entire sector for approx 100
continuous hours speeded up a bit. The "equalized" version of the
movie should be more understandable to humans. It tries to show each
frame with equal areas of each grey level to enhance contrast. We
might expect beforehand that anything moving in front of stars is not
going to make a great deal of difference to the naked eye -- or even
the naked telescope -- but pushing up the contrast to max might see
something if there is something to be seen.

I'm still working on the tool chain to produce these "final movies"
for each sector to make them more interesting. The ones here are the
result of a few iterations of mucking around with astronomy "FITS"
files that have 32-bit pixels and mostly blow normal image processing
tools out of the water.

The "raw" movie is also there. It is dark and nothing seems to happen.
It turns out for other sectors even this version shows something
weird. So I'm keeping them for each sector we look at. :)

Then the AI has been asked to chop each movie up into overlapping
squares of around 25x25 pixels. The TESS pixel is approx 1 arcsec wide
and contains about 1 visible star. Sometimes there are more. The AI
processes each 25x25 tile in the movie sequence and extracts some kind
of a number we can roughly think of as the "average brightness" of the
tile image-by-image. It tries to match this up against hour-by-hour
UFO reports as available in the NUFORC database. This has some
problems. The NUFORC reports specify dates/times in local time.
People would not particularly like having to write GMT times in their
reports and figuring out which time zone they're in and whether
daylight savings is in effect is sometimes not easy. And that's not
counting having to go back to 1950 and do the same determinations knowing
the laws for who has how many different timezones and when they switch
if at all to/from DST is dependent on the year. Rules change. So --
a total mess. The AI does a fair job of guessing from all the info in
each UFO report. It also comes pre-armed with skepticism that people
will report the correct time of sighting anyway, esp if the report is
made months, years or decades after the sighting.

So having all these comparisons the AI selects the best one and shows
the movie for that square and a plot of how well the brightness of the
given tile follows the ups and downs of hourly UFO reports around the
same time (up to several hours later) as the telescope snapped the images.

We see in the case of S12 the graph of the comparison is pretty close.
It turns out many other sections of the same FFI show the same kind of
pattern. It's just that when you look at those "enhanced movies" you
would go to sleep because the changes are so so so tiny they are hard
to see and not at all convincing to anything but a computer program or
a data scientist.

Overall the detailed movie for S12 shows somewhere in there
"something" is seen creeping from right to left in front of 2 rows of
stars. First one star blinks a little, then another, then another, etc
in a row around 12 arc-seconds long over a period of around 50 hrs.
That may seem like slow movement, but if TESS is seeing something in
the asteroid belt it is moving WAY too fast to be in orbit between
Mars and Jupiter. It seems likely it is something much closer. It
might be a bit of space junk. But then we have to remember -- it
correlates highly with maybe 100 UFO sightings reported over several
days. And the reports include stuff like black spheres, silver
cigars, and the odd grey alien lurking around the garden.

I'll keep tinkering with the tools and will post some more movies in coming
days and weeks. I can tell you now. One or two of them might make you
a bit queazy. Or at least say "wow". Don't say you weren't warned. :)
