Subject: if it isnt aliens it should be

[uploaded 4 times; last 07/09/2024]

Just rec'd an interesting mail from one of the AI programs. This one
is a bit different from most of the others -- it can do some "normal"
deductions -- the kind many of us learned in a past century in
high school geometry.

It deduced something should be true "if UFO's were coming from various
parts of the solar system", it collected the data together, tested it,
and found it was true. A classic bit of science and the kind of thing
I was hoping the programs could do a few years back. Anyway. Nice
surprise.

We have looked at lots of data and seen if these objects are coming
from other parts of the solar system, then they seem to be everywhere.
We started out finding the movement of certain suspect planets was
robustly linked with UFO reports. Either those planets were often
reported as UFOS (even the planets that can't normally be seen with
unaided eyes) or maybe certain objects were coming from or via that
location.

Later, as we picked up more good data on the asteroids and comets
being tracked around the solar system for the past 70y at least, we
found the same links seemed to happen with "quite a lot" of them as
well. As the kids say -- WTF?

Either these objects come from everywhere or something else is going
on but it's hard to say what.

So the AI in question came up with the idea we could check "they come
from everywhere" with a simple test. If they come from everywhere and
they are relatively normal objects they may not like to bounce off of
the sun. If they don't like 5000K temperatures then they might not like
coming too close to the sun. The way we could find that out is to look
at the "elongation" of any suspect planet or asteroid at the time of
peak UFO sightings. If they were coming from planet X and the
elongation of planet X was too small (meaning the angle we see from
earth between X and the sun is say < 20 deg) they either have to go
around the sun and take a longer trip or they don't bother to come at
all during such a time. If we plot the elongation versus the number of
UFO reports in the following days we *should* see when the elongations
from a real "suspect planet" is small UFO sightings drop.

In fact, the AI reasoned further, it might actually peak at a certain
value of elongation and then drop off again because at larger
elongations the distance between X and the earth is again starting to
increase, at least for outer planets. For *inner* planets the best
elongation might be 0 because then the planet could be on the same
side of the sun as us and at the closest possible distance that inner
planet ever gets.

So with a list of the average annual elongation of several 1000
asteroids, comets and a few planets the AI made a little table. It
also found it had to debug a chunk of the database that seemed to
have a lot of bad values entered for elongation -- they should only be
between 0 and 180 degrees but it found due to some past error
(probably some g*d*m humin involved in the processing!) elongations
well over 180 seemed to be scattered through the database.

So here is the table it came up with as the "annual average number of
UFO's seen associated with the elongation of every asteroid, comet and
planet in the data-set". The table is binned by elongation. For the
1000s of data-points it added them to the line with the same elongation
within +-.5 deg.

And, sure enough, the prediction of a "bump" in the curve was born
out. Around elongation 20 deg the "average asteroid" is associated
with a maximum number of UFO's reported for that year. Elongation less
than that are associated with lower UFO activity. Elongations greater
than that are also associated with lower UFO activity. There are some
other small bumps along the way, but by and large "the average
asteroid" seems to be associated with a peak in UFO sightings within a
year of that asteroid being around 20 deg visually from the sun (as
view from Planet Dirt).

As I said in the subject-line, if they haint commin from almost
everywhere these kinds of patterns are a bit hard to explain.
