THE APOCALYPSE IS NOW (cover letter)

Dear Friend,

Discovery Channel Online is mounting a major assessment of the consequences of the Chernobyl accident 10 years later on our website, http://www.discovery.com. Over the next month we will put up approximately 20 stories describing the consequences and the experiences of some very unique people who lived through Chernobyl. Some of them now live in Cleveland, Ohio, like the man who was ordered to bury the 31 operators and firemen who died, and the man who lost 77 pounds and most of his hair just two months after he served at the destroyed plant. Others still live in Belarus and Ukraine, like the 15-year-old girl whose singing career was destroyed by thyroid cancer.

Our project also includes month-long conversation about the 10th anniversary of Chernobyl, called the Chernobyl Forum. When you log on you can ask questions of our Chernobyl victims and experts, you can post your own statements, and you can respond to the questions and opinions others have left.

Would you please pass on to as many other people as possible this message, including the press release below? We figure it will attract people interested in Chernobyl, in nuclear power, and in Russian, Belarussian and Ukrainian life.

Once you log on to our home page, go to "World," then to "Science Wednesday," and finally to our series, "The Apocalypse Is Now."

I would greatly appreciate anything you might do to spread the word far and wide.
